NP-UN Western Bureau.

February 20 Jason Kenney, Leader of the United Conservatives, issued the following statement in commemoration of the conclusion of the Euromaidan Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine:

“Today marks five years since Ukrainians from all walks of life came together on Kyiv’s Independence Square to reclaim their country and set it on the path of true independence. For three months, hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters stood at the barricades, refusing to capitulate to former president Viktor Yanukovych and Vladimir Putin’s plan to drive Ukraine away from Europe and closer to Russia.

“We stand in solidarity with Ukrainian communities around the world, including more than one million Ukrainian-Canadians, solemnly commemorating the hundreds of people who were brutally beaten, shot, and killed by pro-Russian government forces. We must never forget the “Heavenly Hundred,” who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom, dignity, and a better future.

“As Canadians, we are inspired by the bravery of those in Ukraine, who fought for the rights and freedoms that we are fortunate to enjoy here in Alberta. During my time as the Minister of National Defence I was proud to deploy the Canadian Armed Forces to help train and modernize Ukraine’s army. This ongoing training has improved Ukraine’s capacity to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and continued aggression in Ukraine’s eastern territories.

“As we reflect on the Euromaidan Revolution of Dignity, let us remember the sacred fallen, and may their memory be eternal – vichnaya pamyat.”
